National Association News
Submissions for New
E-Journal
Now Being Accepted
In
September MTNA will launch a new publication—the MTNA e-Journal.
“The purpose of the MTNA e-Journal
is to provide our members, especially those in academia, an online,
peer-reviewed journal, which features in-depth, scholarly, research-oriented
articles enhanced through the use of sound, image, and video links,” explains
MTNA Executive Director/CEO Gary Ingle.
Similar to AMT, this publication
will be peer-reviewed by a panel of music-teaching experts.
The MTNA e-Journal will be
published in September, November, February and April. The articles will average
more than 3,000 words each, and submissions are now being accepted.
The MTNA publications staff, led
by the director of publications as managing editor, provides professional
guidance and assistance to the committee and implements all publication
procedures and policies. The MTNA Executive Director/CEO serves as publisher of
the MTNA e-Journal.
Zhu Named Marshall
Scholar
Jessica Zhu, who won top honors at
the MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition at the MTNA National Conference in
Denver, Colorado, last March, was recently named a Marshall Scholar. The
Marshall Scholarships were established in 1953 and give recipients the
opportunity to study for two years at a higher learning institution in the
United Kingdom. Only 40 American students are awarded each year.
Zhu is a senior piano performance
major at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music, and is currently a
student of professor Nancy Weems. She will begin her graduate studies at the
Guildhall School of Music in London in September 2009.
MTNA Student Winners Recognized
by youngARTS
Once again this year, MTNA was
represented in the NFAA’s youngArts Program. Each year, approximately
6,000–8,000 students register for this program, which aims to provide
recognition and awards to young artists across the country.
Eryn LeCroy, an MTNA student
competitions national finalist, has been named a youngArts finalist for
voice/classical soprano. Micah Wright, who placed second in the MTNA national
finals in 2007/2008 and third this year, is a youngArts finalist in music/clarinet. These
two students traveled to Miami, Florida, January 12, for youngARTS Week and
final adjudications, with a chance to be awarded up to $10,000. This
opportunity also provides the chance to be nominated to become a Presidential
Scholar in the Arts. Finalists are in the top 2 percent of all youngARTS
program applicants nationwide.
Representing MTNA with honorable
mention awards, which carries a $250 cash award and considered the top 5
percent of all applicants nation wide are: William Goforth, voice/classical
tenor; Megan Gryga, voice/classical soprano; Page Moon, music/piano; Elizabeth
Perry, voice/classical soprano; Alan Woo, music/piano, and Nadi Hlebowitsh, who
won in a category other than the one for which she was recognized by MTNA.
Gabrielle Haigh won a Merit
award in music composition, winning a $100 cash award and being honored as the
top 10 percent in the country.
Jacek Skryzalin was a 2008
youngARTS winner, receiving a Level III award of $1,000.
